Is it time to change the hybrid battery?<\/p>\n
The battery is one of the most essential components in a Toyota Prius<\/strong>, playing a key role in the efficient operation of the hybrid system that characterizes this popular vehicle. Over time, constant use can affect battery performance, which can translate into decreased fuel efficiency, reduced electric range and, in more severe cases, vehicle starting problems. Understanding when your Toyota Prius battery needs to be replaced or repaired is crucial to keeping your vehicle in top condition<\/strong> and extending its life.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n A Toyota Prius has two batteries, a 12-volt auxiliary battery that is used to power the electronics and start the car and then there is a larger 200-volt hybrid battery located behind the rear seats. This is a rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMH) battery and is used to power the electric drive generators in the Prius transaxle.<\/p>\n The battery consists of 28 Panasonic nickel metal hydride modules, each with six 1.2-volt cells. They are connected in series and produce a total of 201.6 volts and weigh 53.5 kg. The hybrid battery should not be touched up unless the hybrid battery service plug has been disconnected.<\/p>\n How do you know if your hybrid battery life is\u00a0<\/strong>unhealthy<\/strong> and needs<\/span>\u00a0serviced? Here are some common symptoms when a hybrid vehicle\u00b4s battery begins to fail.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n A Toyota Prius’ battery life is not definitive, it will depend on factors like where you, how far you drive and the conditions that you drive it in. Most Prius have an 8 year or 100,000 km warranty but many people drive their cars much longer than that; especially Toyotas. So if you own a hybrid vehicle, at some point in time, you will need to replace the battery.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Back to our customer, indeed he was experiencing the above symptoms.\u00a0 We test his hybrid vehicle battery and results indicated that the battery needed to be replaced.\u00a0 We safely removed the old battery pack from the trunk of the car and replaced with a brand new NiMH battery.\u00a0 Once the switched was completed, we test the new new battery to ensure all was well.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\nToyota Prius batteries<\/h2>\n
