Why should you choose repair over replacement?
There is no doubt that servomotors and drivers will eventually fail in all companies and facilities over the course of time. It is also common for servomotors to be obsolete in the industry in many cases.
Moreover, equipment technology is constantly advancing, which means equipment may become obsolete as time passes. This factor often eliminates your choice between repair and replacement, leaving you with only the option of repairing.
Let’s look at a case where we had to decide whether to repair or replace a servomotor. What did we do?
A customer recently needed some drivers for the Elau Servo Controller PMC-2/11/25/001/00/04/13/01/. For a long time, these drivers have been obsolete and unavailable from the manufacturer.
Should the servomotor or drive be replaced or repaired?
This is where the problem, or the decision, lies.
There are companies that sell obsolete equipment, and as everyone knows, the cost of this equipment is very high. I call these companies “mercenaries” from the world of industry, since they take advantage of circumstances. They sell equipment that is unquestionably tested and checked by them. Whether you like it or not, this is the price.
Eventually, our customer decided to purchase five drivers for more than 44,000 euros. After the equipment arrived in our repair shop, I connected it for a test and was surprised to hear the noise of the fan.
You can see a sticker saying “warranty protection” above the second fan in the video.
The decals “warranty protection” were clearly applied before testing the equipment in good conditions, as is the right procedure.
Immediately after hearing the noise, I sent a video by email, and they responded that we were responsible for the failure.
In the first place, repair companies know that a fan will never make a lot of bearing noise the first time we connect a checked and tested driver.
Once all the considerations were done, we decided to disassemble the driver immediately, and we saw that it had a lot of dust and dirt inside, as you can see in the video.
So you may be wondering…. Why choose repair over replacement?
It is true that not all companies do this, only some. But the downside is that the prices are too high, as they justify them because “it’s their business”.
To make a long story short, the fact is that many repair companies work very well and with high quality standards, so the cost of the repair offers good value for money.
